Teaching & Learning Conversations
Nov. 18 OR 19: Student Self-Assessment in Learning One of the primary goals of a college education is for graduates to have developed more advanced skills in learning and in monitoring their learning in order to make adjustments when necessary. Faculty can play a key role in helping students gain these skills, which in turn can save time for faculty and -- more important -- provide an early-warning alert system about student learning that might not exist to the same degree otherwise. This TLC will provide information about approaches several faculty have found successful for helping students learn how to monitor their learning as well as how faculty then use student self-assessment in ways that more effectively advance student achievement toward course learning outcomes. Series of Articles about Learning Outcomes Since August 2008, the Koehler Center eNewsletter has contained an article in each issue about learning outcomes. These articles build on one another, but each is also a stand-alone reference about the specific learning outcomes topic discussed. Our newsletters are archived on our site – just click on “Faculty Services” above to access a link to our archives. The articles are short, and reading them will provide a good overview of how working with, measuring, and adjusting outcomes to improve student performance can be accomplished.
