Classroom Videotaping
Classroom videotaping is an option for an individual instructor to invite a member of the Koehler Center staff into the classroom to videotape a single class period. Prior to the videotaping, the instructor and consultant talk about what is planned for that class period, specific items the instructor may want to improve as a result of a videotape consultation, and the processes and tools the consultant will use in the course of the consultation. After the videotaping, the instructor and the consultant view the tape to talk about strengths, opportunities for improvement, follow-up strategies, etc.

Contact the Koehler Center to set up an appointment for videotaping.

Another option which some faculty may prefer as a first step is self-videotaping.  The Koehler Center has available for check-out a video camera, tripod, and wireless mic for faculty to use to videotape their classes.  The camera is set on a tripod in the back of the room on wide-angle setting, the instructor presses “record” and then begins the class.  When viewing the tape at home a guide helps faculty know what to watch for and includes information to help interpret one’s results.  (A description of the journal article in which the author describes his research and the development of the instrument and process is available here.)
